Meet Kathleen Macfie (Maine, NC)

East Point Road by Kathleen Macfie

I am primarily a self-taught artist. I grew up in a family of artists and from childhood regularly had opportunities for lessons and for making art. In high school and college I took the odd art course, but my training and professional development come from years of solo practice. Art and art making have always been a part of my life. Over the past several years, I have honed a practice of consistent painting and painting as a daily practice has been my greatest teacher. I split my time between Hillsborough, NC and Swans Island, Maine. I maintain studios in both locations. I am a member of the Orange County Artists Guild, North Carolina and I belong to The Swans Island Open Studio art group. I have hung shows regularly in my NC studio since 2021. I had a solo show through the Swans Island Education Society in 2025 and I have contributed to the Swans Island Open Studio group show for the past three years.

Artist Statement:
I've always had a deep attachment to place and I use paint to express the profound wonder I feel in looking at the world. I paint with an openness to the unexpected–whether that is the introduction of an unanticipated color or perspective or an unusual pattern or line. I strive to create work that evokes movement and emotion and invites viewers to sense rather than simply to see.

Does Gumption Gallery have an in-person space?

No. Gumption is online only, by design. You browse from wherever you are, and art is delivered straight to your door.

Is everything on Gumption original art?

Yes. Every piece is a one-of-a-kind original. No prints, no reproductions, no giclées. So when it sells, it's gone.

What mediums do you carry?

Primarily paintings: oil, acrylic, mixed media, and watercolor works on paper, canvas, and panel.

How are pieces priced?

Prices are set in conversation with each artist. All prices are listed upfront. No "inquire for pricing." No surprises.

How do you select artists?

By invitation only. Gumption is a curated gallery, not an open application platform. If you're an artist interested in being considered, please reach out at hello@gumptiongallery.com.

Can I commission a piece directly from one of your artists?

Yes. Email us at hello@gumptiongallery.com and tell us what you have in mind. We'll make the right introduction and handle it from there.

How do I purchase a piece?

Simply add to cart and check out.

Can I buy art as a gift?

Yes. Enter the recipient's shipping address at checkout. Add a gift note in the order notes field and we'll include it with the piece.

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes. Art makes a great gift! [Link to gift cards.]

What if I have a question about a specific piece?

Email us at hello@gumptiongallery.com. We can send additional photos, talk through dimensions, or share more about the artist. Ask before you buy. We’re here to help.

How does shipping work?

Each artist ships directly from their studio using a label generated by Gumption Gallery. We handle the logistics, and the artist packs the work according to our packaging requirements. You receive a tracking number as soon as it ships.

Most pieces ship within 5-7 business days of purchase. Transit time is typically 3-7 additional business days depending on your location. You'll get a tracking number by email the moment it ships.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is calculated at checkout based on the piece's size and your delivery location. You'll see the exact cost before you confirm your order. Again, no surprises.

How is the artwork packaged?

Every artist follows Gumption's packaging guidelines: glassine paper, bubble wrap, and double-wall boxes appropriate to the size and medium. Large pieces ship via specialized art freight carriers to ensure safe handling.

Does my purchase come with a Certificate of Authenticity?

Yes, every piece comes with one.

What is your return policy?

All sales are final. We want you to feel good about it before you buy, not after, so please make use of the photos, dimensions, and AR feature on each listing to help you. & you can always email us with questions before you order.

What if my piece arrives damaged?

Email hello@gumptiongallery.com within 48 hours of delivery with photos of the damage and the packaging. Keep everything as we need the original packaging to file the carrier claim. We'll make it right.
